Education Update

I just wanted to give an update on the progress I’ve made toward changing my career path. I’ve applied at two of our local technical colleges and they are both waiting for me to take my Accuplacer test, which will determine which classes I will need to enroll in to start out. The way I understand it is, let say I suck at math, then I can take an Algebra course as my math elective rather than Calculus. The Accuplacer isn’t a pass/fail type of test, but rather it just decides where you are in your learning.

I’ve taken a few practice tests to familiarize myself with the material. It’s been over 10 years since I’ve looked at any of this stuff, but I was rather impressed with how quickly I picked up where I left off. The reading and writing portion of the test was pretty easy for me. I breezed through both of those, so I’ll be pretty confident come test day. The math was a different story. Historically I’ve been kind of a math nerd, but if you don’t use it you kind of lose it. It took a few go-rounds before I was confident with the material. I will practice a few more times this week, and I plan to go in to test on Thursday or Friday of this week.

I don’t know if I’ve said this in any of my other posts, but my career goal is to work toward a Bachelors in Computer Science. I’ll be starting with a Software Development degree, which I hope can get me in the door and on toward a new career, but from that point I will constantly be studying and working to advance that degree. It’s not going to be an easy road, but I think it will pay dividends in the long term.
